Welcome to the Spain family farm blog. This journal was created to help us seven siblings document our hopes, ideas, resources and activities as we work toward revitalizing our farm, which is situated in Iowa between the happenin’ little towns of Prole and Cumming. Along with our husbands, wives, children, cousins and mom, JoAn van Balen, we will explore opportunities to nurture our lives and the land.
Feel free to contact us through email at thedirtonthefarm@gmail.com.
Best,
Siobhan

Hi, all,
Memorial Day is a somber holiday. Please remember those who served and did not survive, and enjoy the freedoms they preserved for us. Maybe plant an extra row in your victory garden. War is not healthy for children or other living things.
Got an update from Gourmet magazine in today’s email. Gourmet has decent coverage of what they call The Politics of Food. Here’s the link to a thought-provoking article
http://www.gourmet.com/foodpolitics/2009/05/politics-of-the-plate-the-price-is-wrong
(I guess you’ll have to copy and paste. Any suggestions for make these links active?)
Last week I attended a presentation by Deborah Madison, chef from Greens restaurant and author of Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone. She made many of the same points. One quip, that out-of-season food shipped from long distances ought to earn frequent flyer miles, is a keeper!
Do hope to visit the farm this summer. Have a hoe handy so I can do a little weeding, or a pitch fork with which to turn the compost piles.
Smiles,
C.
