Molly, Mom and I took our idea of holding a weekly farm meeting for a test drive this evening. We met over dinner at Mom and the fist order of business was to define the meeting itself: what do we want to accomplish in these meetings?; how long do they need to be?; what are our expectations? We decided that in order to keep the meeting short and active, we would hold future meetings at the start of the day over coffee. So, the next meeting will be Friday, April 10, 7 a.m. at La Mie Bakery.
The purpose of the meetings will be mainly to touch base on the upcoming weekend’s work activities (which will be posted here each Thursday or Friday). Another topic of interest is assigning roles or committee-of-one possibilities for heading up specific needs such as farm labor, research, financial management, etc.
Areas that could use some role assignment: 1) provide a regular financial standing report; 2) make sure fence line is well maintained and free from weeds; 3) weed-the-garden duties (Molly and Siobhan volunteered to be official weeders); and 4) continue research on farm topics and visit other farmers (Molly and Siobhan so far)
This weekend’s Farm Work options:
- Installing the garden fence posts gets top billing – Saturday is the day, before the bad weather arrives.
- Acquire loads of straw, hay, mulch and compost.
- Build retainers for recently relocated apple trees, which are planted on a slope.
Upcoming:
- Mom wants pursuing a vision state to stay on our list. When all siblings can here at the same time would be optimal, so perhaps August.
- Molly is hoping to do a field trip to Northeast Iowa.
